Museum of the Beartooths

The past comes alive courtesy of the Stillwater Historical Society - a primary source for research. Indians, trappers, mountain men, pioneers, ranchers, farmers and miners have all called the land that is now Stillwater County home. Displays, books and resource material can be found at the Museum of the Beartooths. It is located at 440 E. 5th Avenue North in Columbus. The mailing address is: P.O. Box 1, Columbus, MT 59019. Volunteers are very familiar with county resources including the Stillwater County Courthouse.

The museum collection includes all the notes and photographs from Jim Annins, author of "They Gazed on the Beartooths". This book is also in reprint and for sale in the museum gift shop. The museum has early photos of the people, towns and businesses of Stillwater County and numerous editions of "The Stillwater News". It also has original papers and photos of the crime scene, trial and hanging of Frank Robideau.

Historical Society member Florence Carlson has compiled a book on the Mountain View Cemetery near Columbus, Mountain View Cemetery 1903-2003. A group of Columbus business men met in 1903, when they learned that the owners of the land north of town would not allow any more burials on their property, they began plans for a cemetery west of town. However, it was not until 1907 that the Articles of Corporation for the Colmbus Cemetery Association were filed in Columbus, Yellowstone County, Montana. In 1931 the City of Columbus acquired the cemetery and have maintained it since that time. Adjoining space has been added since then. The book has an index and maps for each section. There are 2,437 burials listed in the index. The text of the book lists each marker and headstone along with the inscriptions on each. A number of the graves from the old cemetery north of town were moved into the new cemetery. December 31, 2001 is the final date of burials listed. The cost of the book is $30.00. Florence also has supplements that cover 2002 and 2003 for $3.50. For more information or to purchase a book please contact Florence.

Museum memberships are $10 per individual or $15 per family. For more information or to become a member contact: The Museum of the Beartooths, c/o Mim Wieler, P.O. Box 1, Columbus, MT 59019.
